Hindugrass was formed in 1998 to create a blend of classical and folk music from northern India with traditional folk and bluegrass music from the southeastern U.S.  The group will delight your ears as they combine the melodic and rhythmic structures of the ragas of Hindustan with songs from the Appalachian tradition.

You’ll enjoy the mix of the familiar with sounds from a diversity of global musical sources, as the group plays music composed by its own members.

The concert is being presented outdoors on the Village Green in Southern Village, Chapel Hill.  It’s an open seating concert; bring your own lawn chairs or blankets, and food and beverages of your choice.

GRAVY BOYS IN SOUTHERN VILLAGE

The Gravy Boys will perform their special brand of Acoustic Americana in Southern Village on Sunday, June 6.  Featuring heartfelt vocal harmonies, boot-stomping rhythms, and lively stage shenanigans, their high energy show will provide an evening of great entertainment.  Their music has been influenced by a wide spectrum of traditional American artists, from the traditional American catalog of the Carter Family, Jimmie Rodgers, Woody Guthrie, the Maddox Brothers and Ralph Stanley, to the classic elements of Hank Williams, the Louvin Brothers, George Jones, the Everly Brothers, Gram Parsons and Bob Dylan to the modern perspectives of artists such as Steve Earle, Tom Waits, Ryan Adams and the Avett Brothers.   The Gravy Boys take old-time themes and bring them into the present day, with an authentic passion that will resonate with all.  They’ll  delight you with their music, while tickling your funny bone with their zany antics.

Besides performing at many venues, including the renowned Merlefest, the band has also been heard on WUNC’s ‘Back Porch Music’ and even on NPR’s ‘Car Talk’.  They’ve released 2 CD’s of original music, with a third on the way.

‘Better Off Dead’, Grateful Dead tribute band will play on Sunday

Monday, May 24th, 2010

GRATEFUL DEAD TRIBUTE BAND ‘BETTER OFF DEAD’
TO PLAY IN SOUTHERN VILLAGE THIS SUNDAY

Celebrate the unofficial opening weekend of summer with a FREE concert by Grateful Dead Tribute Band ‘Better Off Dead’, this Sunday at 7:00pm.  The Grateful Dead style jam band played here last year, and is returning by popular demand.

Better Off Dead was formed in 2008 to celebrate the music, philosophy and spirit of the Grateful Dead, paying homage to the music of the Dead, while not necessarily re-creating every note played by the original group.  All of the ‘Better Off Dead’ band members are seasoned musicians with experience playing in bands in many parts of the country.  Two of the founding players in the band are lead vocalist Whitney Pearsall, who’s been performing since childhood, and guitarist Rich Saltz who’s experienced over 150 Grateful Dead shows, and whose playing style is heavily influenced by Jerry’s Garcia’s music.  Rounding out the band are Jeff Brown on guitar, Brant Kay on keyboards and shared lead vocals, Chris O’Hara on bass and Lars Hartmann on drums.  Combined, the group produces an intricate and creative mix of sound, heavily influenced by the Grateful Dead.

Monday, May 17th, 2010

Plan on a Sunday evening of Music on the Green with the Galen Kipar Project, the innovative, convention-defying band out of Asheville, brought back to our venue by popular demand.  Featuring singer/songwriter/composer/ guitar & harmonica playing Galen Kipar, along with Jon Morrow on 8 string guitar-bass and Jeremy Young on drums and percussion, the group has its roots in blues, jazz, and world beat rhythms.

Asheville’s small-scale symphony, otherwise known as the Galen Kipar Project, will delight your ears with its innovative fusion of folk, classical, jazz and blues, while engaging your mind with their lyrics.  Their songs have been described as “complex yet accessible, cohesive and poignant, experimental folk masterpieces.”

The Galen Kipar Project has played extensively to rave reviews all over the southeast, and more recently has performed at the revered Knitting Factory in Brooklyn and as far away as San Francisco.  In 2009 they played to a jam-packed, toe-tapping crowd at the Kennedy Center’s renowned Millennium Stage in Washington, DC

This concert is FREE.  You’re encouraged to buy some food and beverages from one of our Southern Village restaurants or Weaver Street Market, or bring your own picnic.  Bring along your lawn chairs or blankets and get ready to relax and spend your Sunday evening with some unique and enjoyable music.

Fun at opening day of the 2010 Farmers’ Market

Friday, May 7th, 2010

We’ve made a big change to this year’s Farmers’ Market, moving its location to Aberdeen Drive between the parking lot and the stage.  Opening day at the 2010 Southern Village Farmers Market brought out lots of fresh strawberries, all types of greens, meat, gorgeous flowers, wine & baked goods, from some of our favorite farmers from last year, plus Ben Whatley, who’s new to the market.  We saw many customers who were familiar from last year, plus lots of new faces.

In more news about the Southern Village Farmers’ Market, Seth Kingsbury, chef and proprietor of local restaurant Pazzo, has decided to have Pazzo underwrite the entire season of the Market.  The delicious items on Pazzo’s menu are heavily dependent upon the use of local produce.

The opening market had musical entertainment from ‘Touch of Brass’, a brass quintet, plus the Culbreth Middle School chorus, led by the energetic, inspiring and talented Mr. Michael Jones.

KidsZone attracted a lot of families who brought their kids out to play in our new, delightfully shaded location while enjoying free samples of strawberries.

Arts On The Green will return in 2011

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

What a fun day Arts On The Green was! The artists displayed an appealing selection of hand-created items, ranging from whimsical craft pieces and prints, to fine art, jewelry and furniture. Ambience was provided by musical groups Volunteer Brass Choir, North Columbia, Southern Routes and Chatham County Slim & Papa Mike. The Triangle Youth Ballet brought an afternoon of eclectic and very entertaining dance performances. Children were inspired to dabble with the art supplies that they found on the Kids Art Experience Table. Even the weather cooperated!

A great time was had by all, and the artists and performers are enthusiastic about returning next year. Once we set a date for next year, we’ll post it here!

We want to thank the many people who made this day possible–Deb Harris, Carolyn Doyle and Larry Favorite of the Orange County Artists Guild for organizing the event, all of the artists who displayed their gorgeous creations, Lauren Lorentz de Haas, the energetic and resourceful leader of the Triangle Youth Ballet, all of the dancers and musicians who performed, the Southern Village business people who volunteered to help run the event, the community volunteers, and officer Phil Smith of the Chapel Hill Police Department.  Danny Gotham and his crew worked hard to ensure that our sound system was perfect all day.  We of course also want to thank Market Street residents for their patience and cooperation as we closed off some of their usual parking spaces for the day and wreaked havoc with their traffic patterns.  We appreciate all of your cheerful efforts!
