You Saved The Symphony!

UPDATE TO ‘SAVE THE SYMPHONY’ EFFORTS

Thanks to your overwhelming show of support, both financial and in your kind words, the North Carolina Symphony will return to Southern Village this year for its 11th annual free performance on the lawn.  Please mark your calendars for Friday, June 25th at 7:30, which is the date that the Symphony will be performing.

We’ve had a very successful fundraising drive to help cover the Symphony’s costs in performing here, but additional donations are still needed.    If you haven’t already done so, we encourage you to join your friends and neighbors in donating what you can.  Also, please pass this appeal on to anybody you know who may be able to help.

REMEMBER: All checks will be made out to the North Carolina Symphony, and all proceeds of this fund-raising effort will go directly to the Symphony.  Your donation is tax-deductible, and eligible for your employer’s matching funds if your company has a matching gifts program.  And one more piece of good news; all of the funds that we raise are eligible for the State of North Carolina’s matching gift to the Symphony!  This makes your contribution go even further in helping the Symphony survive their economic hardships.

Please contact Bev Carr at bcarr@mcarolina.com if you’re able to help.  If you wish to send a check, please make the check out to The N.C. Symphony, and mail or bring it to the following address:

Arts on The Green: Orange County Artists Guild (OCAG) Arts Fair & Triangle Youth Ballet (TYB) National Dance Week Dance Festival

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

Market Street  Southern Village is presenting ‘Arts on The Green’, an  event that will feature an unprecedented collarboration between the Orange County Artists Guild (OCAG) and The Triangle Youth Ballet (TYB).

The juried art show presented by OCAG will feature the works of 65 local visual artists, members of Orange County Artists Guild, Chatham County Artists Guild, Carolina Designer Craftsman, Piedmont Designer Craftsmen, as well as several exciting new artists juried in for the show.  Expect to find hand-crafted pottery, paintings, jewelry crafted in a variety of materials, garden art, metal sculpture, textiles, handmade books, glass works, prints, photography and more.

Art will range from the affordable, starting under $20 for casual gifts and collections, to fine art and designer crafts and furniture in the $100’s to $1,000’s—items to be appreciated or purchased by connoisseurs and collectors.  This will be a great opportunity to find unique gifts in all prices for Mothers Day, Graduation, Weddings, or just for you.

Additionally, the day will be a celebration of National Dance Week, with an afternoon of dance and other musical performances by The Triangle Youth Ballet and friends, appearing for the second year in Southern Village.  This event drew a large audience last year, attracted by the diversity of dance genres and the wide age range of the performers.  Bring your lawn chairs and blankets, and maybe even a picnic, so you can watch the dancers from The Triangle Youth Ballet, Bollywood performers from Chapel Hill High School (CHHS), ‘Arts in Action’ from Frank Porter Graham Elementary School, and a Capoeira (Brazilian martial arts form) exhibition.  There will also be live music from the Ukulele orchestra from CHHS, the Volunteer Brass Orchestra, ‘alt-country-ska-folk’ from local group North Columbia, and much, much more.  See below for complete schedule of music.

Location: Market Street in Southern Village.  Artists will be set up around and on the Village Green on Market Street.  Live music and dance performances will be held all day on the stage on the Green.

The event is free and open to the public.

The Rain Date for the event is Sunday, May 2nd, 10:00am to 5:00pm.

PARKING:  Due to the large attendance we expect at the Arts Fair, we know that parking will be challenging, but not impossible.  Please park in the center lot on Market Street, on side streets, or  in the lots behind and under the buildings on Market Street.  Or you can park in the Town of Chapel Hill Park-and-Ride lot, which is adjacent to Market Street and an easy walk.  To get to the Town lot, enter Southern Village on Market Street, make the first left onto Kildaire Road, and continue straight through to the lot.  You may also want to consider leaving your car behind and taking one of the Town’s free buses (Routes NS or V) that stop right on Market Street  in Southern Village.

Paperhand Puppet Intervention to visit Southern Village
For Earth Day Celebration
On Saturday, April 17th

Mark your calendar now to celebrate Earth Day with a very special production by the ‘Paperhand Puppet Intervention’ troupe.   The event will feature an inspiring show called “The Crawdad’s Conundrum,” which will appeal to all ages—adults as well as children.  As described by the Paperhand folks, the show focuses on the web of life, ecology, biology, and the environment. In this show, told in rhyming verse, the Troupe uses rod puppets and cardboard to tell the story of a fiesty young Crayfish who is determined to have her voice be heard. All sorts of adventures unfold as the heroine and her friends–a deer, a turtle, and other river dwellers try to protect their home from the ever increasing needs of the man.  The show will be presented in a traditional style puppet stage, complete with a red curtain.

Following the show, the performers will lead a lively parade around Market Street in Southern Village.

Place:  The Village Green at Southern Village, Chapel Hill

Date and Time: Saturday, April 17th, 2010 2:00 pm

Admission:  Free; please bring an item of non-perishable food to donate to the Weekend Backpack Project of TABLE (check out www.tablenc.org for more information about this initiative.)
