Annie Raines Blues Harmonica Workshop for Girls &Women!
Sunday, May 10, 2-3:30 p.m.

Have you ever wondered why there aren’t more female harmonica players? Would you like to be able to make music wherever you go, with the world’s most expressive and portable instrument? Looking for something fun to do for your mom on Mother’s Day? If you’ve always wanted to learn the harmonica, but aren’t sure whether it’s right for you, this is a unique opportunity to try it out in a gathering for girls and women only, taught by W.C. Handy Award-winning harmonica player, Annie Raines.

You’ll learn the elements of good harmonica technique: single notes, chord rhythms, and basic blues structure, practice some familiar tunes, and begin improvising. No previous musical experience is necessary–all you need is the desire to play. Raines has been acclaimed as the world’s foremost female blues harpist. Her influences include the giants of Chicago-style and country blues-style harmonica, including Sonny Terry and Little Walter. She has played with James Cotton, Lazy Lester, Kim Wilson, John Sebastian, and Susan Tedeschi. Raines has toured and recorded with her partner, Paul Rishell, for the last 16 years and teaches private students at home in Boston, MA.

For this workshop, you’ll need only a 10-hole, diatonic harmonica, in the key of C. Marine Band and Blues Harp brand are $28 at the Music Loft in Carrboro and other less expensive brands are available as well. If you’re interested in getting a head start, a book, How to Play the Pocket Harmonica, by Pickow & Shulman, is available online for under $10.  The workshop will be held in Southern Village.

ONE WORKSHOP FEE SCHOLARSHIP IS AVAILABLE TO A RISING HIGH SCHOOL SOPHOMORE, JUNIOR OR SENIOR.

2009 SOUTHERN VILLAGE FARMERS MARKET
Final 2009 Market: Thursday August 27th
3:30 – 6:30

The Farmers Market has been back in Southern Village for its 6th year.  Visit the final day of the market for the freshest local fruits and vegetables, plus meats, baked goods, and fresh flowers, and to say goodbye to your favorite farmers until next year.  Of course, if you want to see the farmers between now and next May, they’ll still be at the Carrboro Farmers Market on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

This is your last chance to win a prize in the 2009 weekly raffle.   The final prize is a $25 gift card from Weaver Street Market.   The raffle entry box will be located at the Farmers Market information tent.

We are now featuring a ‘Kids Zone’ at the Market–bring your children for art projects, face painting, hula hoops, bubbles and best of all, a sprinkler for them to splash in.

August 27th is Chapel Hill Children’s Clinic day at the Farmers Market.  Representatives from this local pediatric office will be on hand with informational handouts and to sponsor this week’s KidsZone art activities.

Southern Village welcomes spring with a Children’s Safety Fun Day. Events will begin at 10:00 am on Saturday, March 21st in the rear parking lot at the Mary Scroggs Elementary School in Southern Village, when the Chapel Hill Police Department will host a Bike Rodeo. The event will feature a 4-station bike safety course which will be set up in the parking lot. The Bike Rodeo will last until noon. The program is designed for children of elementary school age, who are encouraged to bring their bicycles so that they can drive through the course, practicing the safe bike riding techniques that the police officers will be teaching. The event is designed to be fun as well as educational. It is open to the public and is free of charge.

From 12:00 noon until 2:00, there will be activities on the Village Green on Market Street in Southern Village, including refreshments, bike decorating, crafts activities, and safety handouts. Our special guest will be Troo, an animated character from the UNC Injury Prevention program who teaches important safety habits with fun as a key component.

A highlight of the afternoon will be a Children’s Safety Puppet Show, “Johnny Joins the Fire Department, presented jointly by the Chapel Hill Museum and the Chapel Hill Fire Department on the stone stage in the Village Green beginning at 1:00 pm. An additional highlight will be a drawing immediately following the puppet show for a brand new children’s bicycle provided by Performance Bicycle.

Tickets for the drawing will be sold at the event for $1.00 each, and proceeds will be donated to the Chapel Hill Youth Council. The purpose of the youth council is to offer an organization through which the youth of our community can benefit both themselves and their community, with an emphasis on service learning. The proceeds from this project will go towards their “Teddy Bear Program” which benefits traumatized youth in Chapel Hill.

Mary Scroggs Elementary School can be reached by driving south on 15-501 from downtown Chapel Hill or the University, and making a right hand turn at the light at Market Street, which is the main entrance to Southern Village. Driving on Market Street, as you wind around Harrington Bank, make the first left at Kildaire Street, which leads directly to the school.
