Preventing Obesity by Design (POD) Community Meeting

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

We’re excited to announce that the Chapel Hill Day Care Center in Southern Village has been selected as the Orange County 2010 site for the ‘Preventing Obesity by Design’ (POD) project!  The school is now in the process of converting their playground to an outdoor learning environment that will promote increased physical activity for children and thus forestall the risk of childhood obesity.

Childhood obesity is on the rise and now affects over 30% of 2-4 year olds in our state.  The POD project,  led by the Natural Learning Initiative, converts typical mulch-covered playgrounds into green landscapes which introduce children to the natural world and provide opportunities for active play and exploration.

POD is sponsored by the Natural Learning Initiative at N.C. State, Orange County Partnership for Young Children, and Child Care Services Association.  To educate the public about this unique program and engage the community in volunteering to help with the POD initiative, the group is holding an informational meeting at Christ Church on Wednesday, September 15th from 6:00pm-8:00pm.

Southern Village Labor Day Weekend Variety Show & School Supply Drive

Friday, August 6th, 2010

Join us for this holiday weekend’s variety show that will celebrate the start of the new school year!  The show’s two acts feature two very popular local music teachers; the Scroggs Elementary music teacher, Sheila Fleming in her group Trilogy, and the Culbreth Middle School music teacher, Mr. Jones, headlining the Michael D. Jones Jazz Trio.  The music will begin at 7:00pm.

This will be a fun evening for the whole family, so we’re encouraging everybody to come early (around 5:30 pm) to bring a picnic and socialize, and play games on the Green before the concert.  We’ll provide balls, hula hoops and our ‘corn hole’ bean bag toss game.

The Tumble Gym is organizing a school supply drive to benefit needy local children, so please bring along any extra school supplies that you wish to donate.  SPECIAL NOTE:  The Tumble Gym will match your donations, to double the benefits to local schoolkids!

David Dyer & The Crooked Smile Band coming to Southern Village

Monday, August 2nd, 2010

Are you ready for an evening of high energy country-rock music at its finest?  Come out to see the extraordinarily talented and entertaining David Dyer & The Crooked Smile Band rock Southern Village!

David Dyer & The Crooked Smile Band (CSB) are a diverse group of veteran musicians who play their own style of bluegrass-dusted “porch-rock”, fusing Byrd-like vocal harmonies with Prine-like storytelling that is sometimes humorous, sometimes guttural, but always honest.

CSB has been crafting roots-inspired music since December 1999, released an independent CD in the Fall of 2000, and are now out supporting frontman and principal songwriter David Glenn Dyer’s latest record, “Crossroads Grocery,” currently receiving international recognition.

Witness one of their high-octane live performances, described by one music writer as “Hank Sr. meets the Beatles”, and it is obvious that this band
truly loves what they do.    The band is made up of:

David Dyer on lead vocals, acoustic guitars,  & blues harp
Jim Crew on keyboards & background vocals
Allyn Love on pedal steel guitar & dobro
Bernie Petteway on electric guitars
Ken Weigand on bass & background vocals
Francis Dyer on  drums & percussion
