SOUTHERN VILLAGE ANNOUNCEMENTS
Save The Symphony Update
UPDATE TO ‘SAVE THE SYMPHONY’ EFFORTS
Late last week, we sent out an urgent appeal to the community, asking for your financial help in bringing the North Carolina Symphony back to Southern Village for their 11th annual free performance on the lawn. As we outlined in that letter, the Symphony performance here this summer was in jeopardy due to severe budget constraints. Their costs in performing here exceed by $8,000 the contribution that Market Street and Harrington Bank jointly provide each year, and this year, the Symphony simply can’t subsidize that amount.
Since our appeal went out, the response has been overwhelming. Many of your friends and neighbors have already contributed. Although we haven’t yet raised the $8,000, we’re continuing to work with the Symphony to make this year’s concert happen. We’ve raised about $5,700 so far, and we told our representative from the Symphony that we’re committed to finding the rest, or about $2,300 more.
Although we haven’t yet raised the $8,000, the Symphony just informed us yesterday that they’ve decided to come back on Friday evening, June 25th for their performance on the lawn! So mark that on your calendars.
We are still pursuing financial support, and encourage you to join your friends and neighbors in donating what you can. Also, please pass this appeal on to anybody you know who may be able to help.
REMEMBER: All checks will be made out to the North Carolina Symphony, and all proceeds of this fund-raising effort will go directly to the Symphony. Your donation is tax-deductible, and eligible for your employer’s matching funds if your company has a matching gifts program. And one more piece of good news; all of the funds that we raise are eligible for the State of North Carolina’s matching gift to the Symphony! This makes your contribution go even further in helping the Symphony survive their economic hardships.
Please contact Bev Carr at bcarr@mcarolina.com if you’re able to help. If you wish to send a check, please make the check out to The N.C. Symphony, and mail or bring it to the following address:

URGENT: Help bring the N.C. Symphony back to Southern Village this summer
Letter to Southern Village Homeowners, Neighbor and Friends:
I’m writing on behalf of Market Street Association (MSA). As most of you know, we’re the organization that maintains and upgrades The Village Green and holds the many events that take place on The Green and on the stage.
The absolute highlight of our events is the annual performance by our state treasure, the North Carolina Symphony. In fact, the Symphony has been performing annually in Southern Village for the last ten years. We have recently received some unfortunate news from the Symphony. As many of you know, the Symphony has been under extreme financial pressures. The performers and administrators alike have had to take deep pay cuts. Hitting closer to home, they’ve also had to reduce to only 3 the number of summer performances on their schedule for 2010. Included in those 3 performances are venues that they missed last summer. Sadly, after 10 years of performing in Southern Village, they very simply don’t have the funds to come here this summer.
When we learned of this news, we went back to them and asked them how much it would take for them to return. Adding up what Harrington Bank and Market Street Association spend to bring the Symphony here, we realized that there is a shortfall of $8,000.
The purpose of this letter is to ask the Southern Village residents, neighbors and friends to make up this $8,000 shortfall. We’re asking that each of you take a serious look at what it means to you, your household, your property values, and your community to hold this priceless event in Southern Village. We’d like you to consider what a magical event the Symphony evening is, enjoyed by young and old alike. Seeing the Symphony perform under the stars is the highlight of the year for so many people in our community. This prestigious and noteworthy event sets Southern Village apart from any other community in Chapel Hill, and in fact, most other communities in the entire state. It helps to enhance the reputation of Southern Village as an upscale, culturally alive community.
Looking at the numbers, there are 530 single family homes in Southern Village and 140 town homes. If each of those households contributes $12, our goal of $8,000 would be easily met. Obviously, not all households can or will take part in this fundraising effort, so going back to the numbers, we need only 275 or 320 families donating $25 or $30 each. Think about what it would cost you and your family to attend a Symphony event at Memorial Hall or at their home venue in Raleigh—much more than $25 or $30 per family. If your family can commit to a donation of $50 or $100, it would certainly help to close the $8,000 gap and ensure that the event returns this year.
Some of you may wonder why Market Street Association doesn’t just donate the additional $8,000. The main reason is that by the time we heard the news from the Symphony, we had already made commitments to bring two major new events to Southern Village—the Orange County Artists Guild (OCAG) Arts Fair (formerly Arts in The Meadow at Meadowmont) and a performance by the renowned Paperhand Puppet troupe. Both of these events represent significant financial outlays. Furthermore, in addition to the funds that we donate directly to the Symphony each year, we spend an equal amount on logistical expenses to handle the event (parking, lighting, sound, security, and much more.)
One important note—this is an urgent request! The Symphony needs to know by Monday, February 22. We don’t need the money right now, but we do need the commitment from you, so that we’ll know now if we can close the $8,000 funding gap. I encourage you all to look into your hearts and see what this performance really adds to your lives, to the lives of your children, and to your community. I respectfully ask that you consider donating as much as $50 or $100 or even more. If you feel that you want to be a major Symphony sponsor, donating $1,000, we would be delighted to have your name on our banner and in the program book. Remember, your donation to The Symphony is tax deductible.
In closing, I want to thank you all for the enthusiastic support you’ve shown for the many events that we hold in Southern Village, and in particular, for your attendance (over 2,000 of you!) at our annual Symphony evening. Please let us know by Noon on Monday if you’re able to help.
Sincerely,
Beverly Carr

Samuel Burns Sculpture Installed on The Green in Southern Village
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 19, 2009
Samuel Burns Sculpture Installed on Southern Village Green
CHAPEL HILL–Southern Village is participating in The Town of Chapel Hill’s Sculpture Visions program, a town-sponsored outdoor sculpture exhibition that runs from October 2009 to October 2010. Sculptor Samuel E. Burns installed “Redwood” today, an 18-foot-tall aluminum sculpture. It will remain on The Village Green for one year. The sculpture is lighted at night, so that it can viewed and enjoyed in the evening.
Most of the sculptures selected for the exhibition are on town property, but the village center developers, D.R. Bryan, John Fugo and Christine Edwards, believed that The Village Green would be an excellent venue for public art.
Burns is a North Carolina native who had a career working in construction, including exhibit design and construction at the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro. When he hurt his knee three years ago, he decided to devote himself to sculpture. Currently he lives in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where he participates in an artist-in-residence program.
“I named this sculpture ‘Redwood’ because its form reminds me of the canopy of a giant redwood tree,” Burns said. The sculpture was recently on exhibit in Johnson City, Texas, and Burns drove it to Chapel Hill for the installation. “I am pleased with this location. The trees and the buildings in Southern Village frame it beautifully.”
Southern Village is home to another sculpture from the 2004-2005 Sculpture Visions program. ‘Golden Portal’, created by Wayne Trapp, is an eight-foot-high modern expression of the classic arch. The Golden Portal is in front of the building at 300 Market Street.

It’s Official: Southern Village Subway is “Green”
IT’S OFFICIAL: SOUTHERN VILLAGE SUBWAY IS GREEN!
Market Street at Southern Village is pleased to announce that our local Subway® Restaurant has received its official LEED® certification, the first stand-alone Subway restaurant in the entire state of North Carolina to be so recognized. Local businessman and Subway® franchisee Mike Abdallat was honored with a certification plaque in a ceremony at the restaurant on Monday, June 29th, attended by city, state and Subway® officials. There is ample parking near the restaurant in Southern Village, which can also be reached by 2 Chapel Hill Transit Bus Lines.
The complete press release and more information about LEED (R) certification is included below:
CHAPEL HILL SUBWAY® GOES GREEN IN NORTH CAROLINA
WILL BE FIRST LEED® CERTIFIED STAND-ALONE RESTAURANT IN ENTIRE STATE
– First SUBWAY in NC and Only Second in Chain’s 30,000+ Store System -
CHAPEL HILL, NC – North Carolina’s first stand-alone LEED® certified SUBWAY® Restaurant on Market St. in Southern Village — will be officially recognized in a ceremony to take place on Monday, June 29 at 10A.
In fact, the store is only the second LEED certified store in the entire SUBWAY system that totals more than 30,000 stores as well as the first of some 740 SUBWAYS in NC.
LEED is a third-party certification program for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. LEED serves as a benchmark for rating environmental performance and occupant satisfaction for several building scenarios.
City, state and SUBWAY dignitaries will officially mark the unique distinction by presenting Franchisee Mike Abdallat with a plaque along with the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification.
“All of us at NC SUBWAY Group are excited with the recent opening of the first SUBWAY restaurant in North Carolina to be built and operated in accordance with LEED standards,” said Tim Mann, chief operating officer, North Carolina SUBWAY Group, Inc. “We are especially appreciative to SUBWAY Franchisee Mike Abdallat who understood the importance of this initiative early on in the process. SUBWAY looks forward to many more LEED restaurants throughout North Carolina in the near future.”
“I am thrilled to receive a LEED certification and to be the first restaurant in the state. It is a fantastic store in an incredible community. I wanted my new ‘Green’ SUBWAY to compliment Southern Village and the community surrounding it,” Abdallat said. “I believe customers, residents and merchants will see that we’ve created an inviting neighborhood, family-friendly restaurant. I could not have achieved this without the support of the building’s landlord, John Fugo, who backed my project 100 percent.”
Abdallat, who lives in Durham, owns two other SUBWAYS in Carrboro and Raleigh. He said his ‘Green’ investment was already paying dividends since his utility bills have been reduced by at least half. “I am sold on ‘Green’ and will definitely do another eco-friendly store.”
Since September ‘08, SUBWAY and Abdallat have been working with Cary-based Green Tech Consulting, Inc. to earn a LEED certification for the Southern Village store. GreenTech worked with the U.S. Green Building Council to obtain the certification, complete the entire submittal application for review by the USGBC, and respond to comments and accept the final rating following USGBC’s review.
”We look forward to sharing what we have learned about applying sustainable principles and practices to the SUBWAY franchise to more SUBWAY locations,” said Liz Bowen, LEED AP, GreenTech Consulting, Inc. “SUBWAY is extending its concept of healthier lifestyle choices from the customer’s standpoint to the health and well being of the environment as a whole. We are happy to be a part of this concept transformation.”
Designed to have an overall smaller environmental footprint by requiring less energy and consume less water, the eco-store elements for the SUBWAY restaurant include — recycled floor tile, high efficiency Energy StarTM rated HVAC systems, low flow and flush fixtures in public restrooms, less lighting power and more natural light for seated customers. Overall, the new SUBWAY store was renovated within its existing shell, thus avoiding a new building footprint.
Additional eco-friendly elements of the SUBWAY store include:
- Building materials used from sustainable sources and extensive use of recycled products and furnishings
- LEED interior and exterior signage
- Remote condensing units for refrigeration and ice-making equipment
- Energy StarTM rated kitchen equipment
- Low VOC adhesives, sealants, paints and coatings
- Recycling collection of post-consumer recyclable waste generated in-store
- Forest Stewardship Certified (FSC) wood.
The SUBWAY is accessible by two Chapel Hill Transit bus lines and is walkable to numerous shops and services.
