INFORMATION

The 2012 Southern Village Farmers Market will take place every Thursday from 3:30 – 6:30 pm, May through October. The market will be held at the same place as last year, in the center of Market Street, on Aberdeen Drive, adjacent to the Village Green. The fun will begin on May 3rd, with a special visit from the Harrington Bank crew presenting a fresh strawberry dessert in our Joyful Cooks area, and will continue through October 25th. An additional market will be held as well;  a Holiday Craft & Gift Market, tentatively scheduled for Sunday afternoon, December 2nd.

This is the ninth year that there will be a farmers market in Southern Village. In addition to the convenience of bringing farm fresh goods and hand-crafted items to the public, our goal is to provide a fun atmosphere as well, with events each week, including cooking demos, book signings, recipes and free samples, music, and the return of our popular KidsZone. Each week, we provide a variety of art and play activities for kids to enjoy while their parents shop, and also a place for parents to gather. In addition to KidsZone, the Southern Village Farmers Market will have several other features that make it more than just a farmers market.

Fresh Seafood from the North Carolina coast: Phil Campbell, the proprietor of Lookout Seafood, ran Chapel Hill’s Flying Burrito restaurant for 21 years before selling the restaurant a few years ago and moving to the N.C. coast. Captain Phil willcontinue to bring fresh seafood to our farmers market this year.

Master Gardener Table: Jane Saiers of RambleRill Farm is an Orange County Master Gardener. She’ll be setting up a Master Gardener table at the RambleRill booth to offer gardening tips and answer your gardening questions. Ask Jane every Thursday for the gardening tip of the week!

Farmer Foodshare: Farmers will donate unsold or excess produce, and the public can donate purchased produce or cash to help feed needy people in our community.  This past year, we donated over 800 pounds of food to CORA (The Chatham Outreach Alliance.) Visit www.farmerfoodshare.org for more information about this wonderful program.

Community Book Exchange: Recycle your used books–bring in children and grown-up books that you’ve already read, and pick up books that others have brought in.

We’ll have weekly special events at the market, including a Mothers Day gift market on May 10th, a Tomato Day, Pepper Palooza, plus guest chefs, and many more fun days.

The Southern Village Farmers Market will be convenient, fresh & fun, with an assortment of wonderful local vendors who will be selling their produce, flowers, baked goods, Angus beef, North Carolina seafood, artisanal crackers and cheeses, and hand-crafted items. Most of the vendors from our previous farmers market will be returning, plus there will be an assortment of terrific new vendors.  Check out what a recent Market visitor had to say about her experience:
