Preventing Obesity by Design (POD) Community Meeting

We’re excited to announce that the Chapel Hill Day Care Center in Southern Village has been selected as the Orange County 2010 site for the ‘Preventing Obesity by Design’ (POD) project!  The school is now in the process of converting their playground to an outdoor learning environment that will promote increased physical activity for children and thus forestall the risk of childhood obesity.

Childhood obesity is on the rise and now affects over 30% of 2-4 year olds in our state.  The POD project,  led by the Natural Learning Initiative, converts typical mulch-covered playgrounds into green landscapes which introduce children to the natural world and provide opportunities for active play and exploration.

POD is sponsored by the Natural Learning Initiative at N.C. State, Orange County Partnership for Young Children, and Child Care Services Association.  To educate the public about this unique program and engage the community in volunteering to help with the POD initiative, the group is holding an informational meeting at Christ Church on Wednesday, September 15th from 6:00pm-8:00pm.

For more information about this project and its affiliated organizations, visit any of the following links:

Hindugrass to open for Friday, September 3rd outdoor movie

Hindugrass bringing  their unique musical blend to
Southern Village
Friday, September 3rd, 6:30 pm (Before the movie)

We were all disappointed when the previously scheduled Hindugrass performance had to be  cancelled due to rain.  We’re fortunate now to have another chance to hear them in concert.

Hindugrass was formed in 1998 to create a blend of classical and folk music from northern India with traditional folk and bluegrass music from the southeastern U.S.  The group will delight your ears as they combine the melodic and rhythmic structures of the ragas of Hindustan with songs from the Appalachian tradition.

Band members have been influenced by a wide variety of world music genres, and between them, play dozens of different and often exotic instruments, ranging from keyboards, bass, violin and bassoon to jaw harp, tabla, sarod, and many, many others.

You’ll enjoy the mix of the familiar, with sounds from a diversity of global musical sources, as the group plays music composed by its own members.

The concert is being presented outdoors on the Village Green in Southern Village, Chapel Hill, in advance of this evening’s movie  on the lawn.  It’s an open seating event; bring your own lawn chairs or blankets, and food and beverages of your choice.

David Dyer & The Crooked Smile Band coming to Southern Village

Are you ready for an evening of high energy country-rock music at its finest?  Come out to see the extraordinarily talented and entertaining David Dyer & The Crooked Smile Band rock Southern Village!

David Dyer & The Crooked Smile Band (CSB) are a diverse group of veteran musicians who play their own style of bluegrass-dusted “porch-rock”, fusing Byrd-like vocal harmonies with Prine-like storytelling that is sometimes humorous, sometimes guttural, but always honest.

Witness one of their high-octane live performances, described by one music writer as “Hank Sr. meets the Beatles”, and it is obvious that this band

a capella gospel harmonies

This show is presented by the ArtsCenter.

Location:  The Village Green at Southern Village, Chapel Hill, NC

Admission:  $5 cover charge

Rain Location:  In the event of rain, the concert will be moved to the stage at The ArtsCenter in Carrboro.

ARTIST INFORMATION:
Donna  Washington is a nationally acclaimed storytelling performer and award-winning author and  recording artist.  She tells her stories at festivals, conferences, schools and libraries all over the country.  We’re fortunate to have her weave her tales for our entertainment.

Mary D. Williams, a renowned singer of traditional gospel music, has devoted her life to keeping alive the traditions of African-American spiritual music.  In addition to performing, Ms. Washington is also a scholar and a teacher of African American history.  Her goal is to make her music accessible to a wide listening audience.  Ms. Washington’s powerful voice is reminiscent of Mahalia Jackson.  She’ll perform with piano accompaniment.  Ms. Washington was featured on Dick Gordon’s ‘The Story’ aired on NPR on Wednesday, June 9th.

The Mighty Gospel Inspirations were formed in Durham, NC in August of 1988 as a gospel quartet, and are making a repeat appearance in Southern Village.  The group includes founding members, brothers Mike and Kenneth Sanders who have been singing together for over 40 years.  The current membership also includes Ms. Rome Hemingway, Larry Perry, James Bailey and Robert Waldrop.  Combined, they bring over 160 years of years of singing energy and performing experience from a variety of groups and musical styles.    The Mighty Gospel Inspirations are focused on singing traditional Jubilee style a capella gospel rarely heard today.  It’s a powerful sound, reminiscent of what was performed in the 1940’s and 1950’s.  This is an intricate singing style that requires tightly-knit 4-part harmony, resulting in a sound very much like a single voice accompanying a lead singer.  Many long hours of rehearsal are required to make it successful and The Mighty Gospel Inspirations have dedicated themselves to this task.

Bring your fathers to celebrate their day with these exciting performers on the stage at the Village Green in Southern Village.  Guests are invited to bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating, and can bring a picnic or purchase food from any of the Southern Village food establishments.

‘Better Off Dead’, Grateful Dead tribute band will play on Sunday

GRATEFUL DEAD TRIBUTE BAND ‘BETTER OFF DEAD’
TO PLAY IN SOUTHERN VILLAGE THIS SUNDAY

Celebrate the unofficial opening weekend of summer with a FREE concert by Grateful Dead Tribute Band ‘Better Off Dead’, this Sunday at 7:00pm.  The Grateful Dead style jam band played here last year, and is returning by popular demand.

Better Off Dead was formed in 2008 to celebrate the music, philosophy and spirit of the Grateful Dead, paying homage to the music of the Dead, while not necessarily re-creating every note played by the original group.  All of the ‘Better Off Dead’ band members are seasoned musicians with experience playing in bands in many parts of the country.  Two of the founding players in the band are lead vocalist Whitney Pearsall, who’s been performing since childhood, and guitarist Rich Saltz who’s experienced over 150 Grateful Dead shows, and whose playing style is heavily influenced by Jerry’s Garcia’s music.  Rounding out the band are Jeff Brown on guitar, Brant Kay on keyboards and shared lead vocals, Chris O’Hara on bass and Lars Hartmann on drums.  Combined, the group produces an intricate and creative mix of sound, heavily influenced by the Grateful Dead.

Asheville’s Galen Kipar Project returns to Southern Village

Plan on a Sunday evening of Music on the Green with the Galen Kipar Project, the innovative, convention-defying band out of Asheville, brought back to our venue by popular demand.  Featuring singer/songwriter/composer/ guitar & harmonica playing Galen Kipar, along with Jon Morrow on 8 string guitar-bass and Jeremy Young on drums and percussion, the group has its roots in blues, jazz, and world beat rhythms.

Asheville’s small-scale symphony, otherwise known as the Galen Kipar Project, will delight your ears with its innovative fusion of folk, classical, jazz and blues, while engaging your mind with their lyrics.  Their songs have been described as “complex yet accessible, cohesive and poignant, experimental folk masterpieces.”

The Galen Kipar Project has played extensively to rave reviews all over the southeast, and more recently has performed at the revered Knitting Factory in Brooklyn and as far away as San Francisco.  In 2009 they played to a jam-packed, toe-tapping crowd at the Kennedy Center’s renowned Millennium Stage in Washington, DC

This concert is FREE.  You’re encouraged to buy some food and beverages from one of our Southern Village restaurants or Weaver Street Market, or bring your own picnic.  Bring along your lawn chairs or blankets and get ready to relax and spend your Sunday evening with some unique and enjoyable music.

2010 Southern Village Farmers’ Market opens on Thursday!

Our weekly Farmers’ Market will open this Thursday, and will be held from 3:30 – 6:30 pm each Thursday,  continuing through August 26th.  In its seventh year, the Market will be held at a new location this year–in the center of Market Street, on Aberdeen Drive, adjacent to the Village Green.  Our local restaurant Pazzo, with chef Seth Kingsbury heavily dependent upon local produce,  will be underwriting the Southern Village Farmers’ Market this season.

In addition to the wonderful local farmers who will be selling their produce, flowers, baked goods, wine, plants and hand-crafted items, there will be entertainment and special events each week.  The opening market on May 6th will feature two live musical performances; ‘Touch of Brass’, a local brass quintet at 4:30 pm, and the Culbreth Middle School chorus at 6:00.  Featured produce at the market this week will be sweet and juicy local strawberries, many varieties of greens, spectacular flowers, and many  more fresh veggies.

Our special KidsZone will return as well, offering  a variety of fun play activities for children to enjoy while their parents shop, and also provides a place for parents to gather.  Many KidsZone activities from 2009 will be continued this year,  plus there will be some new surprises!

Stop by the Southern Village Farmers’ Market each week for the freshest and healthiest locally-grown foods, for recipes, cooking tips and samples, and just to hang out and enjoy the Farmers’ Market ambience.

Valentines in The Village

SOUTHERN VILLAGE HAS A HEART
Help the Earthquake Victims in Haiti
While Celebrating Valentines in the Village

Let’s all show our hearts, have some fun, and get some exercise at the same time!  The businesses in Southern Village invite you to celebrate Valentines Day on Market Street, while also remembering the unfortunate earthquake victims in Haiti.

All of this will happen on Friday afternoon, February 12th from 2:30 – 5:30, when  children and parents can walk around to 15 of the businesses on Market Street to collect treats and other goodies.  We recommend that you start at Harrington Bank, where you can pick up a free treat bag for each child, then proceed around the Village for your goodies.

After Harrington Bank, your next stop should be the Christ Church office at 105 Market Street, where you’ll have an opportunity to show your concern for the people of Haiti as you pick up your glow bracelets.  Through its close association with The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), the Church is accepting monetary donations. We are being assured that 100% of money donated to UMCOR for this purpose will go directly to helping the needy citizens in Haiti.  Please encourage your children to save their allowances and donate it to this cause on Friday the 12th.  This can provide a valuable lesson about helping those who are less fortunate than we are.  Please visit www.christmethodist.org/article/prayers–support-for-haiti/ to learn more about how your donation will help.

The Tumble Gym will do something a little bit different that afternoon, offering each child a free half hour of Open Gym time.  Just stop by, sign your child in, and enjoy 30 minutes to yourself while your child burns some energy in a safe environment!  This might be the perfect opportunity to do a little bit of Valentines shopping on Market Street.  To help celebrate the occasion, both Bloom and The Cottage Shop will be offering some Valentines Day special purchases.  Note to husbands and boyfriends–this would be a great time to pick up a special little Valentine’s something for your wives or girlfriends!

EVENT DETAILS:
Date & Time: Friday, February 12th, 2:30 – 5:30 except for Christ Church office, open only until 5:00.
