Southern Village Subway is officially “Green”

IT’S OFFICIAL:  SOUTHERN VILLAGE SUBWAY IS GREEN!

Market Street at Southern Village is pleased to announce that our local Subway® Restaurant has received its official LEED® certification, the first stand-alone Subway restaurant in the entire state of North Carolina to be so recognized.  Local businessman and Subway® franchisee Mike Abdallat will be honored with a certification plaque in a ceremony to be held at the restaurant on Monday, June 29th at 10:00 am, attended by city, state and Subway® officials.  The restaurant will offer coupons and specials all day.  Southern Village offers ample parking and can also be reached by 2 Chapel Hill Transit Bus Lines.

Location:  Subway® Restaurant, 400 Market Street, Southern Village, Chapel Hill, NC

Time & Place:  Monday, June 29th, 10:00 am

The complete press release and more information about LEED (R) certification is included below:

CHAPEL HILL SUBWAY® GOES GREEN IN NORTH CAROLINA

WILL BE FIRST LEED® CERTIFIED STAND-ALONE RESTAURANT IN ENTIRE STATE

 – First SUBWAY in NC and Only Second in Chain’s 30,000+ Store System -

CHAPEL HILL, NC – North Carolina’s first stand-alone LEED® certified  SUBWAY® Restaurant on Market St. in Southern Village — will be officially recognized in a ceremony to take place on Monday, June 29 at 10A.

In fact, the store is only the second LEED certified store in the entire SUBWAY system that totals more than 30,000 stores as well as the first of some 740 SUBWAYS in NC.

LEED is a third-party certification program for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. LEED serves as a benchmark for rating environmental performance and occupant satisfaction for several building scenarios.

City, state and SUBWAY dignitaries will officially mark the unique distinction by presenting Franchisee Mike Abdallat with a plaque along with the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification.

“All of us at NC SUBWAY Group are excited with the recent opening of the first SUBWAY restaurant in North Carolina to be built and operated in accordance with LEED standards,” said Tim Mann, chief operating officer, North Carolina SUBWAY Group, Inc. “We are especially appreciative to SUBWAY Franchisee Mike Abdallat who understood the importance of this initiative early on in the process. SUBWAY looks forward to many more LEED restaurants throughout North Carolina in the near future.”

“I am thrilled to receive a LEED certification and to be the first restaurant in the state.  It is a fantastic store in an incredible community.  I wanted my new ‘Green’ SUBWAY to compliment Southern Village and the community surrounding it,” Abdallat said.  “I believe customers, residents and merchants will see that we’ve created an inviting neighborhood, family-friendly restaurant. I could not have achieved this without the support of the building’s landlord, John Fugo, who backed my project 100 percent.”

Abdallat, who lives in Durham, owns two other SUBWAYS in Carrboro and Raleigh. He said his ‘Green’ investment was already paying dividends since his utility bills have been reduced by at least half. “I am sold on ‘Green’ and will definitely do another eco-friendly store.”

Since September ‘08, SUBWAY and Abdallat have been working with Cary-based Green Tech Consulting, Inc. to earn a LEED certification for the Southern Village store. GreenTech worked with the U.S. Green Building Council to obtain the certification, complete the entire submittal application for review by the USGBC, and respond to comments and accept the final rating following USGBC’s review.

”We look forward to sharing what we have learned about applying sustainable principles and practices to the SUBWAY franchise to more SUBWAY locations,” said Liz Bowen, LEED AP, GreenTech Consulting, Inc. “SUBWAY is extending its concept of healthier lifestyle choices from the customer’s standpoint to the health and well being of the environment as a whole.  We are happy to be a part of this concept transformation.”

Designed to have an overall smaller environmental footprint by requiring less energy and consume less water, the eco-store elements for the SUBWAY restaurant include — recycled floor tile, high efficiency Energy StarTM rated HVAC systems, low flow and flush fixtures in public restrooms, less lighting power and more natural light for seated customers.  Overall, the new SUBWAY store was renovated within its existing shell, thus avoiding a new building footprint.

Additional eco-friendly elements of the SUBWAY store include:

  • Building materials used from sustainable sources and extensive use of recycled products and furnishings
  • LEED interior and exterior signage
  • Remote condensing units for refrigeration and ice-making equipment
  •  Energy StarTM rated kitchen equipment
  • Low VOC adhesives, sealants, paints and coatings
  • Recycling collection of post-consumer recyclable waste generated in-store
  • Forest Stewardship Certified (FSC) wood.

The SUBWAY is accessible by two Chapel Hill Transit bus lines and is walkable to numerous shops and services.

Sunday Night Music: African American Traditions

MIGHTY GOSPEL INSPIRATIONS

DASHAWN HICKMAN & STEEL MOVEN

playing the Searing Sound of Sacred Steel

in

AFRICAN AMERICAN TRADITIONS:

A unique evening with two acts

The Mighty Gospel Inspirations were formed in Durham, NC in August of 1988 as a gospel quartet.  The group includes founding members, brothers Mike and Kenneth Sanders who have been singing together for over 40 years.  The current members also include Ms. Rome Hemingway, Larry Perry, James Bailey and Robert Waldrop.  Combined, they bring over 160 years of years of singing energy and performing experience from a variety of groups and musical styles.    The Mighty Gospel Inspirations are focused on singing traditional Jubilee style a capella gospel rarely heard today.  It’s a powerful sound, reminiscent of what was performed in the1940’s and 1950’s.  This is an intricate singing style that requires tightly-knit 4-part harmony and results in a sound very much like a single voice accompanying a lead singer.  Many long hours of rehearsal are required to make it successful and The Mighty Gospel Inspirations have dedicated themselves to this task. Have a listen, you will not be disappointed.

Also appearing will be Dashawn Hickman & Steel Moven, out of Mount Airy, NC featuring Dashawn on Pedal Steel Guitar.  The group is a gospel blues & jam band, playing in the African American tradition of Sacred Steel.

Trilogy – This Sunday

Trilogy:  Have Folk; Will Swing.

PROFESSIONAL BIOGRAPHY OF PERFORMERS
Sheila Warner and Richard and Brooksie Edwards first met in 1998, when Sheila was a finalist in the Triangle Folk Music Society’s first songwriting contest.  Over the next two years, they shared the stage at local coffee houses and showcases, until their fate as a trio was sealed when they moved in across the street from one another in June of 2000.  They have been performing together ever since, developing a loyal following for their blend of swing and folk; standards and originals; three-part harmonies and solo performances.

Their name comes from the blend of three singer-songwriters who have, each in their own right, developed followings over the years.  Sheila Warner performed as part of the popular Midwest trio, Maxton Bay, and has won wide recognition and acclaim for her songwriting.  Brooksie Edwards was one-half of the duo , Sage & Sweetgrass, and has performed at numerous festivals in the New England area, while Richard Edwards had been a regular part of the local music scene for several years before Trilogy came together.  Between them, they have had a representative in the finals of the NC Songwriters’ Cooperative Songwriting Contest four of the contest’s initial six years—with Sheila and Richard having made the finals twice each.  Sheila is currently finishing work on a CD.  Richard’s first recording, Space & Time, was released in 2001.

SPECIAL NOTE
Sheila Fleming is the Music Specialist at Mary Scroggs Elementary School.  This concert is a great opportunity for her current and former students and their families to see her in concert!

DO YOUR HEART A FAVOR

Next, let’s think about our own hearts and what we can do to be heart healthy. What could be better for your heart than an energizing cardio workout at our favorite health club, O2 Fitness? You can exercise on any of their dozens of cardio machines, including their brand new “Wave Runner”—kind of like a traditional elliptical trainer, but with a new and different twist. A gift certificate to O2 Fitness could be a perfect gift for your loved one, or a couples gift for your sweetie and yourself. If you mention that you read this on the Southern Village website, they’ll be happy to give you a certificate for a free one-week trial.

VALENTINES DINING

If all of this exercise makes you hungry, you may want to supplement your workout with some heart healthy food. Jaluka Natural Bistro is the perfect place to eat some delicious and healthy food, all freshly prepared. Jaluka’s soups are a great way to do your heart a favor—low fat, nourishing and yummy. Vegetarian Chili is my personal favorite. Also, try their Acai berry smoothies, which not only are delicious and refreshing, but have many health benefits, especially in combination with a good cardio workout. Stop in to Jaluka to ask Maureen or Eduardo for more of the positive attributes of this fruit, which has been featured by Oprah.

We all know that Subway offers some heart healthy options. Besides the traditional low fat options of chicken and turkey subs, they also feature delicious Veggie Delite® and Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki subs, which are also both low fat.

Maybe a workout makes you want the comfort of a warm cup of coffee or hot chocolate. La Vita Dolce is kicking your favorite beverage up a notch with special Valentines Day flavors, like a Dark Chocolate Raspberry Mocha or a Cherry Vanilla Latte. Add a couple of their chocolate-dipped pizelles, and you’ll be in heaven. Does it get any better than this?

As of today (January 26th), Chef Seth has not yet announced the Valentines specials at Pazzo. However, on a recent visit to Pazzo, I tried the sublime Veal Meatballs in a Mushroom Marsala Sauce over Pasta, and was reminded of one of my old favorite movies, Lady and the Tramp, where the two lovebirds (I mean dogs) shared a dish of Spaghetti. Pazzo’s take on this spaghetti classic is heavenly, and what a deliciously updated reprisal of this memorable movie scene! Add a couple of appetizers and a bottle of wine for instant romance!

Speaking of sharing, how about splitting the delicious Peking Duck Feast (advance order please) at Merlion, which is perfect for 2—my husband and I enjoyed it together on a recent anniversary.

Or you can start your Valentines celebration at Town Hall Grill with one of their signature cocktails, a pretty pink Cosmo or a Chocolate Espresso Martini. For Valentines Day, they’ll be featuring a Prime Rib dinner special. For this occasion, I’d recommend adding a bottle of sparkling wine to complete the celebration.

VALENTINES GIFTS/SHOPPING

The Cottage Shop has a large selection of lovely Valentine’s Day cards for your special someone. While there, you may also want to pick up something to pamper your sweetheart with a gift of fragrant bath soaps, salts or gels. My favorite fragrance there is Provencal, with its soothing lavender scent.

If you want some sweets for your sweetie, you need go no further than Market Street Books for their large candy selection.

100_2720.jpg

They’ll even make up a custom decorated gift bag of candy decorated in the spirit of the holiday. You may also want to pick up “Love Poetry Out Loud”, an enticing anthology of romantic poetry.

Ladies, be sure to check out the jewelry case at Bloom for a selection of beautifully crafted and very unique sterling silver cufflinks for your husbands or boyfriends. If you’re on a budget, but want to send a romantic message, Bloom has the most adorable windup toys, a dancing man and a dancing woman. Their hands can be linked together, and the man and woman dance with each other—too cute!

Bloom is also featuring an assortment of Valentines hand-towels

100_2766.jpg

and fun acrylic Valentines vases, which they can fill with a charming arrangement of seasonal flowers.

100_2737.jpg

If a flower arrangement isn’t your thing, how about an edible arrangement? For total deliciousness, Edible Arrangements is featuring several Valentine-themed fresh fruit “bouquets”, some with chocolate-dipped fruit. An article in the January 22nd Wall Street Journal featured Edible Arrangements and raved about their chocolate-dipped bananas. I have to agree! Stop into the shop to experience firsthand the delightfully refreshing fresh fruit smells. I recently tried their Hearts & Berries arrangement and dipped the fruit into a chocolate fondue. It was a delight for all of the senses and healthy too—just remember that chocolate is a vegetable.

Shopping for in-home dining? Weaver Street Market has all that you need, including a thoughtful selection of wines, locally-produced, artisanal cheeses, plus beautiful, hand-crafted Luca Chocolates, made right here in the Triangle.

Maybe you’ve detected a theme here—I guess I have to come clean and confess that I’m a chocaholic, in case you hadn’t guessed that already.

MARKET $TREET MONEY Gift Certificates

If you want to buy a gift for someone, but are uncertain about what they want, please consider one of our Market $treet Money gift certificates, available for purchase at Harrington Bank in $10 and $25 denominations.

100_2771.jpg

Recipients can use their certificates in any of the 16 participating businesses in Southern Village.

VALENTINES DATES

Valentines Day falls on a Saturday this year, so you can plan a romantic date. How about dinner at one of the restaurants and a great date movie? My Valentines picks at The Lumina Theatre are “He’s Just Not That Into You” and “The Pink Panther”, among other films that they’ll be screening.

If you’re a romantic kind of guy, maybe you want to pop the question over a nice dinner out. How about presenting the engagement ring on one of the beautiful crystal ring holders available for only $10 at the Cottage Shop? 100_2728.jpg

Please consider Market Street Southern Village as a pleasant alternative to mall shopping. All of our shop and restaurant owners really care about their businesses and their customers. You’ll notice the difference when you visit any of the businesses here.

Space Available For Your Next Event!

Market Street Southern Village has both indoor and outdoor venues available for rental for a variety of events. The Village Green is a lovely outdoor green space with a brand new stage, and is large enough to comfortably accommodate hundreds of people. The Green is well suited to concerts, art fairs, large get-togethers, rallies, etc.

Also available is the lobby of the 410 Market Street building-a smaller, tastefully appointed indoor space, which is ideal for art exhibits, small receptions or other intimate events.

Please contact Beverly Carr at bcarr@montgomerydevelopment.com for any inquiries regarding these spaces.
